First Child

Before the Baby Arrives

Planning for your first child involves getting your own life in order before s/he arrives. If you haven't already, writing a last will and testament is a must-do for parents-to-be. Sit with your partner and discuss who will be financially, physically, and emotionally able to take on the responsibility of caring for your child if anything should happen to the both of you.

First consult the family members and/or close friends you have in mind as guardians. After you have established who the guardian(s) will be, make an appointment with an attorney to file appropriate legal documentation. Death may not be a pleasant thing to consider in light of your child's impending birth, but it is an act of love to prepare for his/her well-being in the future.

Decorating the Nursery

If you are unsure of what your baby's gender will be, when setting up baby's room, consider painting the nursery walls in a neutral color such as yellow or green. Whichever color you choose, keep it in a soothing shade. A popular compromise is a sage color, which translates on your walls as a verdant and peaceful color that evokes the outdoors. You can also add stencils of animals, plants or clouds to the borders of the room to break up the solid color.

Baby-naming Tips

When considering baby names, think about the name(s) s/he will already have. Your surname should work nicely with the first name you choose. Some parents like to create a pleasant-sounding combination of names such as "Daniel Elliot" or spruce up a not-so-original surname with a unique and/or inspiring first name such as "Patience Smith."

Names should also have a similar feel to other siblings' names. For example, naming one child Christopher and the other Tequila can look a little strange on family holiday cards.

While it's up to you as parents to decide what you'd like to name your baby, it's best to steer clear of trendy names. Celebrity kids' names like Maddox and Apple may be cute now, but perhaps not so much when little Apple heads off to college or wants to get a job as an investment banker.

There are lots of books on baby names available at any of our uTANGO online booksellers. Start shopping now and earn toward your $1 million cash payout. Not a member of uTANGO? Find out how everything you're going to need for your new little one can help you earn up to $1 million for your future.

Staying Cool in the Third Trimester

As you near the end of your pregnancy and your baby grows larger, s/he will be generating a lot of heat. Your basal metabolic rate can increase up to 20 percent. This hot fact is something a lot of women don't realize is what to expect when you're expecting! Don't stress. To keep cool, dress in lighter fabrics, and do any of your workouts later in the day to avoid noontime heat. Ideally, you should swim as exercise, as this is both cooling and great exercise for you and your baby. Before bed, take a cool shower or bath. Leave a portable fan on to keep you cool during the night.

How to Pick Up Your Baby...and Save Your Back

A simple tip every new parent should know is how to pick up their baby...without straining their backs. To put it in perspective, lifting a 10-pound object at arm's length will put about 150 pounds of strain on your back. Before picking your baby up, always stand close, place your feet at hip's length apart, bend your knees and use your stomach muscles to support your upper body.
