Getting Pregnant
Men's Role in Conception
When it comes to conception, men can take steps to help promote the chances. Since sperm need cooler temperatures to survive, men should not take hot baths or saunas during the time you are trying to conceive. Also, sitting for long periods of time can cause the testes to remain at a higher temperature, so men who work at desks should do their best to move around as often as possible during the day.
If it's been a year or more and you and your partner have not yet conceived, have no fear, there are plenty of other options to help you get pregnant. Begin by consulting your gynecologist. S/he will be able to help you locate a fertility specialist who can handle your specific case. Fertility counselors may suggest different times and methods to have intercourse and thereby increase your chances of getting pregnant. Other options such as in vitro fertilization may also be appropriate for you and your partner.
When will I get pregnant? Timing is Everything...
If you and your partner are trying to have a baby but you've have had trouble getting pregnant, remember that timing is everything. Most women know that they are fertile during ovulation, which occurs 11 to 21 days after the first day of a woman's menstrual cycle. (The length of time is determined by the individual's cycle.) Knowing your cycle is key to understanding when conception is most likely to occur.
You can chart your basal temperature easily with a basal thermometer. These are often available at drugstores, usually sold near pregnancy tests. On a calendar, mark your temperature every day, from the first day of your period to the end of your cycle (before your next period begins). When your basal temperature increases slightly (0.4 - 0.6 degrees F), this indicates ovulation.
Keep in mind that sperm can stay active in a woman's body for up to three days, but a woman's egg is only able to be fertilized 12 to 24 hours after ovulation.
