How do you know if speed dating is for you? So what is speed dating? Here’s a speed lesson:

1. At a speed dating event, you will be checked in and given a name tag with a number on it.
2. Your host gives a welcome speech and lets you know how the evening will proceed.
3. You begin at the table number that corresponds with your badge number.
4. After four minutes, the women stay seated and the men move to the next table.
5. Between each date there’s usually a little time for you to make your notes on your dates.
6. This rotation continues until you have met everyone there.
7. Afterwards, cards are collected and you will be informed by the organizers of who wishes to see you again.

It may seem impossible to really get to know anyone in four minutes’ time. And it is. No one is expecting you to find out if the stranger across the table from you is your soul mate. Keeping this in mind is perhaps the best speed dating advice you’ll ever receive. During your four minutes, have a few interesting get-to-know you questions to ask. Beyond the basic, “What do you do for a living?” consider more fun (but polite) questions like, “Who are your heroes?” “What is your favorite vacation spot?” “What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?” You have four minutes to discover something, anything about this human being across from you. Most speed dating locations are local restaurants, bars or coffee houses that are often closed to the general public during speed dating events.
