If you decide on a honeymoon outside the U.S.A., you need more time to plan and it will take longer to travel there. Keep your total number of days in mind before you decide on a honeymoon abroad. If you have only a week and 2-3 of those days are travel days, you are only left with a few days to enjoy your destination. The more remote the locale, the more difficult it can be to reach. Be sure to research necessary documents such as passports and visas and any required shots.
Flight Essentiials
Always pack a carry-on bag with your essentials--a change of clothes, shoes, allowable (only 3 oz.) toiletries, and prescriptions. If the airline loses or temporarily misplaces your luggage, you don't want to spend the first day of your honeymoon trying to replace essential items. This is especially important if you are hard to fit or are traveling to a destination where you need more than a swimsuit and some shades. Need a new carry-on? Shop for travel essentials from e-Bags
Travel Documents
A newly married bride should use her maiden name on airline tickets. With tighter security measures in place, your airline tickets must match the name on your passport or other form of identification. Make copies of your passport and keep them in a separate location. Lock your passport in your room safe when not in use.
In-Flight Tips
Request your seating assignments and order special meals at the time you book your flight. Mention your honeymoon when you book the trip and when you arrive at the gate to check in for your flight. We have heard of in-flight perks and sometimes even complimentary upgrades for couples traveling on their honeymoon. Shop for travel now
Hotel Tips
Inquire about hotel check-in times, particularly when traveling abroad. If check-in isn't until three o'clock in the afternoon and the flight arrives at seven in the morning, you may want to splurge and pay for the evening before you arrive so you can go straight from the airport to your room. After a long flight, the last thing you want to do is to sit around waiting for check-in time.
Make specific room requests, such as nonsmoking, ocean view, or high floor, when you reserve your hotel. If, upon arrival, you find that the room is not to your liking, ask for another until you're offered one that suits you. Be sure to tell the property that you are traveling on your honeymoon. Hotels and resorts like to show special treatment to brides and grooms--perhaps a complimentary fruit basket or champagne! Shop for hotels now
Rental Cars
When arranging car rentals, specify the preferred type of car and get a written confirmation. Make sure you both have your driver's license with you. They are valid in most countries abroad. Check with your rental car agency for specific requirements for the country you are visiting.
Most properties have a concierge that attends to guests' needs, which can mean anything from recommending the quickest way to get to the theater, making dinner reservations, or reserving a car for an excursion into the countryside. The concierge can be an invaluable asset during the planning stage and a wonderful ally when you arrive.
